Biohacking

So what exactly is biohacking? Biohacking is defined as the art and science of changing the world around you and inside you in order to have full control over your own biology. On some level, humans have always been biohacking. The fact that we as humans have made and used tools (to make our lives easier) for hundreds of thousands of years should not surprise you. However, through the breakthroughs of scientific research, as well as the sharing of information via the internet, new and innovative strategies and products are arriving almost daily.

To most biohacking sounds like a laughable term. What do we expect to do? Hack our biology so that we can live forever, without any pain or suffering? Not a chance, but let’s not dismiss the whole concept and potentially miss out on some exciting benefits. If we examine the fitness trends of the last 50 years, the majority have attempted to achieve results through good old fashioned diet and exercise. For the average person, that’s a great place to start. So don’t put the cart before the horse. If you don’t move enough, have a horrible diet and don’t get enough sleep then all the hacks in the world aren’t going to help you. On the other hand, biohacking may be a fun and interesting way to get started and motivated to take more action.

There are always ways to improve every aspect of your fitness game. In reality, diet and exercise only give us the bare minimum level of fitness needed to survive well today. Our lives today are far more complicated than just a decade ago. As a result, we are impacted by many many more stressors and potentially negative environmental stimuli. If you want to effect positive change in your life you are going to need to do more good things for yourself. Biohacking looks for those hidden secrets that will unlock dormant potential, reduce stress or give us that edge.

One warning: In the extreme, biohacking can pervade every aspect of your life to the point of actually decreasing your potential. To sleep, you need a cool dark room and maybe a blanket and pillow. To exercise you simply need to get up out of your chair and move. To eat, select whole unprocessed foods and you should be ok. When we look outside ourselves for the next gimmick, device, product, process or pill we loose the truth and essence of life. Don’t let “hacks” define you and if they don’t add pleasure or results then throw them out.

What follows is a list of web searches. These are links that can, if you are interested, send you down the path of discovery. We are not advocating or recommending any of these although I personally have tried them all and received some measurable benefit. This is far from an exhaustive list and is here only for your own edification. It’s up to you to determine wether or not these hacks work for you. There are no secrets or magic solutions you always will have to go the extra mile to make this life as pleasant and prosperous as possible.
